Hi

Once again thanks to you all for the your advice especially Lyn W.

I have seen the doctor and expressed my worries about the care, he assured me that I would be properly monitored.

I have the booklet, three forms for blood tests to be done every two weeks, a form for an X-ray and another appointment for June so he can see how I am getting on.

With respect to folic acid he doesn't want me to take it yet as the RA is so widely spread that it can prevent the MTX from working to its full potential, but he may prescribe this on the next visit.

So I am happy with the outcome.

By the way Lyn I am 50 years old with two teenage sons 18 and 19 and I am a Foster Carer the lad placed with me at the moment is 8 years old and a little diamond. I also work as a relief Mid day supervisor at a special needs school.

Hi Anne. glad you had a positive appt, sounds good. Hope the methotrexate helps you. So you are a foster carer, and do some cover in special needs school. I worked in special needs for 9 years, until RA became a problem, and wanted to go part time but wasnt allowed to. As I have a nursery nurse qualification I started nannying for 2 days a week, then ended up doing 5 as one of the teachers couldnt get childcare for her daughter. I loved my job, the kids are fantastic, and everything they achieve is so important. Good luck with everything, take care Barb x

Hi Anne

Great to hear that things went so well for you. I am really pleased that the doctor has got you organised with all the bits and pieces you need. At least now you know where you are heading it will perhaps help you to come to terms with the RA.

It's good you are starting on a high dose of MTX it will give you the best chance of getting the disease under control very quickly. It will take a while to kick in but once it does the improvement will hopefully follow soon after. I would say if you start to experience side effects don't hesitate to ask for the folic acid sooner; it is unusual for it not to be given straight away. To reduce the risk of side effects, without fear of interfering with the efficacy of the MTX, a maximum daily dose of 5mg of folic acid is recommended for those patients taking MTX on a regular weekly basis. It is quite normal and has a very negligible effect on the uptake of MTX. There's quite a lot of information on the internet about this.

I have a daughter who is 22 (and is dithering about a career having completed her psych. degree) and three teenage sons, twins who are 17 tomorrow (both at college) and a 15 year old (who has just become a senior prefect for Y11). I know just what it's like having a house full of boys!

Take care and keep posting. Would love to know how you are getting on Smile
Have a lovely weekend,

Lyn x

Hi Anne,

Glad your doctor was able to reassure you. I've obviously read posts in the wrong order and commented on your other thread ................

"Your story doesn't surprise me. I've taken MTX for about 30 years and wasn't prescribed folic acid until a couple of years ago - my Rheumatologists thought I didn't need it. I also didn't have a chest x-ray before I recommenced taking it last November after a 10 month break for an infected hip replacement. Hopefully your doctor gave you more info last Friday?"
